4/30/09 Summit On A Winning Streak
Today's game got off to a rough start with Summit giving up 2 runs on errors in the 1st inning. Things looked up in the 3rd with Ryan Soler's lead-off single. Barreto Nery brought in Soler for the first run of the game with a triple hit deep into left. Brain Surber singled to bring Nery in for the tieing run. Nate Wynne singled in the 4th and his unique base running style brought him to third base in time to score on Connor Del Visco's single giving Summit a one-run lead. JCHS in no way made this win easy. They battled back in the 5th with a run to tie once again, but Summit answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to keep their one-run lead.
The action picked up in the sixth when Josh Salas started things off with a single, followed by Soler getting to first with a base on balls. Josh was able to take home on pass balls, while Soler advanced to third leading to an intentional walk for Nery. Surber then doubled bringing in Soler and Nery. Matt Gorman doubled bringing in Surber and Peter Mora singled bringing in Gorman for a total of five runs in the 6th and 9 for the game.
Defensively, Summit played well. Matt Gorman pitched 6 innings with 9 strike-outs. Barreto Nery closed striking out 2.
Key to this win, was not only a great offensive game, but excellent defense in the 6th inning. Line drives were robbed from Nery on 3rd for out one and Del Visco on 2nd for out two. Although a base hit and error resulted in two runners on base, Surber's throw down to third on a steal was the final out of the inning. The excitement continued in the 7th when a lead-off double resulted in a runner in scoring position. The following two batters struck out. Mora made an amazing dive on a hard grounder down the first base line and tagged the bag with his glove for the final out of the game.
Although the game started out slowly, the final innings had the spectators cheering!
Gooooo Huskies!
